Friday Morning Flowers

Good morning! It's a beautiful day here in Southern California. I hope it's nice where you are too! Today's flowers are purple dendrobium (the orchids), orange ranunculus, and orange asiatic lilies (they haven't opened yet).

This weekend I'm going to Art Alive at the San Diego Museum of Art. Floral designers (really good ones) interpret art through flowers. If you're around, I recommend checking it out. I hear it's awesome.

Easy Strawberry Jam (for real)

'Tis the season for excess fruit! With all the bounty that's starting to appear at farmers' markets and in grocery stores, if you're anything like me, you're seduced every time you shop and end up with more than you can eat or bake. That's where jam comes in handy! Freezer jam, that is. It doesn't involve canning and you can do small batches. It stays good for up to a year (6 months according to some) in the freezer and for about a month in the fridge.

Friday Morning Flowers

Good morning!
Today's flowers are simple and sweet- a yellow rose and purple tulips in the center with greens and alstroemaria around them. Enjoy!

Also, I have new cookies up on Etsy!
I'm really excited about them because they're a brand new creation of mine. I used organic lemon zest and mint from my [container] garden to fancy up some vegan sugar cookies. Check them out and let me know how they sound! Don't forget Mother's Day is sooooon.... I also think they'd be great for showers, teas, favors, graduates, or your next snack.

Have a great weekend!

b) anything I have to say you probably already know
c) you already do a lot of things right. Maybe today will give you the kick-in-the-pants to try some more

So, to that end, I've put together a few links for you to learn from, try, and pass along.

Vertical Garden

Over the past few months, the landscaping outside of my apartment has been torn out and replaced. Unfortunately, this included taking out a couple of big trees that provided wonderful shade from the morning sun. This was especially key in the hot, intensely sunny summer months. Curtains help, but I know that blocking the sun before it hits the glass is crucial to keeping the apartment cool. As I previously mentioned, I had a grand vertical garden plan that I started seeds for awhile back. Today I'm showing you what I did and how easily you can do it. Read on!

Friday Morning Flowers

Good morning! I hope you survived taxes and maybe even got a little richer. I'm one of those crazy irritating awesome people who doesn't wait until April 15 (anymore), and, I have to tell you, it's much less stressful than back in the day when I used to wait until the last moment. Inevitably, some big project or performance or anything more fun was happening at the same time, making me even less interested in figuring out just what exactly the IRS was asking of me. In any case, hopefully some flowers will start the day after on a good note!

These are photos (thanks, Pam!) of a group project I did last month. We were to decorate the display window as if it were the front window of our flower shop. Our shop name is Forget-Me-Not Flowers and Gifts, and we decided on a Spring/Easter theme. It turned out very well- we were pleased and so were our teachers. Yay!
On an unrelated note, I made another batch of the No Knead Bread I talked about in this post, but this time I used bread flour instead of all purpose, increased the yeast from 1/4 tsp to 1/2 tsp, and plopped the dough onto floured parchment paper instead of a towel. I lost a LOT less dough this way (last time a lot of it stuck to the towel. I mean, really stuck). I really encourage you to try this recipe! it's super easy and you get delicious bread out of it :)

This weekend, I'm aiming to try to make and photograph (and, yes, devour) some Mother's Day treats for Etsy. What are you doing?

Vegan Apple, Strawberry, and Blackberry Crisp

The farmers' market was a success! Even though it was cold and cloudy (yes, really) and I couldn't find what I specifically was looking for, I did find the makings for a delicious vegan fruit crisp. Crisps are definitely one of my favorite desserts, and sometimes I even like them better than cake (shh don't tell my mom). They are easy to put together, don't get lots of stuff dirty, and taste good pretty much no matter what. Exact measurements aren't as critical as in cakes, either. And, so, without any further ado:

Friday Morning Flowers

Today I have a pave design to brighten up your weekend. In a true pave, all of the flowers would be at the same height, but as you can see, the roses are a little tall. A smaller variety would have worked better, or taller other flowers. But I really do like this kind of design- the patterns appeal to me. Many of them remind me of looking out an airplane window and seeing fields below. The colors we got this week are fantastic- we got all the colors except blue (rare in flowers), which I thought was pretty rare and wanted to do something to highlight that. Voila, the almost rainbow/color wheel.

What are you doing this weekend? I'm planning on going to the farmers market tomorrow, finding delicious fruit, and making a crisp. I'll share with you, assuming Official Tester doesn't eat it before I can photograph it!

Cupcakes!

Cupcakes! Specifically, Vegan Red Velvet Cupcakes! Pretty exciting. I also made these at my parents' house when I was feeling the urge to bake. This recipe was great because it didn't require any special vegan ingredients (like Ener-G Egg Replacer), so everything I needed was available without an extra shopping trip.

If you're skeptical of vegan desserts, as I know many people are, try this recipe. Two parents, an aunt, and I all thought they were super yummy. These cupcakes are very moist and, I think, the most delicate cupcakes I've ever made. I think you'll find them very easy, as well.

No Knead Bread

No knead bread. Sounds suspicious, I know, but hear me out.

While visiting the parents this weekend, I had lots of trouble sitting still and not baking. I was perusing their extensive magazine and cookbook selection and came across a new one- My Bread by Jim Lahey. It's relatively new, and so is his technique:

Combine flour, yeast, water. Let rise for 12-18 hours. Poke it a little bit and let rise for 2 hours. Bake for 1 hour.

That's it. Seriously.

Friday Morning Flowers

This week is spring break at school, so I don't have a new flower arrangement. However, I got all these fun cuttings from Nadia's beautiful yard. She's got tons of succulents growing along her fence, including an under the sea garden she's created over time. Without a yard, I can only grown in containers, so I'm more limited than Nadia is, but I do what I can. Luckily, the 99 Cent Store sells containers, bulbs, seeds, etc. so I won't grow broke buying things.

I'm going to be on the east coast for a few days, so I probably won't post anything brilliant.

I'm planning on spending the majority of my time eating peeps and jelly beans. If you like peeps, sushi, or being amazed by what people have time for, check this out
